Many Christians today observe Ash Wednesday as the beginning of Lent, a season of fasting and repentance. Churches mark foreheads with ashes, quoting, “For you are dust, and to dust you shall return” (Genesis 3:19). But as believers in CHRIST, are we just dust? And is fasting meant to be a public display? Let’s turn to the New Testament to understand the true meaning of fasting and why man-made rituals can distract from real faith.
Fasting in the Bible: A Private Devotion
Fasting is biblical, but it is never meant to be a public ritual for self-glory. JESUS taught clearly:
“When you fast, do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces that they may appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that you do not appear to men to be fasting, but to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.” (Matthew 6:16-18)
This teaching makes it clear: fasting is a personal matter between a believer and GOD. It should not be done to gain recognition from others. Yet, many churches today do the opposite by placing ash crosses on people’s foreheads, drawing attention to their religious act. This is exactly what JESUS warned against using external symbols to display spirituality.
Ashes on the Forehead: A Symbol Without Biblical Basis
Nowhere in the New Testament are Christians instructed to put ashes on their foreheads. This practice comes from human tradition, not the teachings of CHRIST or the apostles. In fact, Scripture warns us against following external rituals that have no foundation in GOD’s Word:
“These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. They worship me in vain; their teachings are merely human rules.”(Matthew 15:8-9)
Christianity is not about outward symbols but about inward transformation. The mark of a true believer is not ashes on the forehead but a life surrendered to JESUS.
Are We Just Dust? No, We Belong to JESUS!
Many churches say on Ash Wednesday, Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return. While it is true that humans were formed from dust (Genesis 2:7), that is not our identity in CHRIST!
If anyone is in CHRIST, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.(2 Corinthians 5:17)
As believers, we are not just dust we are sons and daughters of the living GOD. JESUS purchased us with HIS blood (1 Corinthians 6:20), and we belong to HIM, not to the dust of the ground. This is why focusing on ashes and death misses the whole point of the Gospel.
True Repentance Is from the Heart, Not a Religious Ceremony
Repentance is not about attending a church service, wearing ashes, or following traditions. True repentance is turning away from sin and seeking GOD with all our hearts. The Bible tells us:
“Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the LORD your GOD, for HE is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love.”(Joel 2:13)
GOD desires a changed heart, not an outward ritual. Instead of following traditions that promote self-righteousness, we should focus on seeking GOD sincerely in our daily lives.
Conclusion: Worship in Spirit and Truth, Not Empty Rituals
JESUS calls us to worship HIM in spirit and truth (John 4:24), not through religious traditions that give an appearance of holiness but lack true spiritual power. Fasting is a personal matter, a time of drawing close to GOD not a public event to prove devotion.
Instead of marking ourselves with ashes and proclaiming to the world that we are fasting, let’s follow JESUS teaching: seek GOD in secret, live for HIM daily, and remember that we are HIS - redeemed by HIS blood, not bound to dust.
True faith is not in rituals, but in a heart fully surrendered to CHRIST.
